Airlines that fly to Grenada - the good and the bad

Airlines that fly to Grenada – the good & the bad

This year, I’ve flown on 2 different airlines to and from Grenada. And I’ll be flying a couple more times next year. Here are some airlines that fly to Grenada.

Direct flights to Grenada

Currently, Caribbean Airlines and Air Canada are the only airlines that fly to Grenada directly from Toronto.

The direct flight is about 5.5 hours. Which isn’t too bad. It’s just long enough to get refreshments on the flight and short enough to make it through without using the bathroom.

Flying with Caribbean Airlines to Grenada

During my first trip to Grenada, I took Caribbean Airlines. That was the only direct flight to Grenada at the time. Air Canada was not running its flights.

It was not an easy experience. The check-in lines at the airport were a mess. The line for those who had checked in on-line took longer than the non-checked in line.

Boarding the airplane was also a mess. It was a small airplane so everything was cramped. We’d be trying to get to our seat down this tiny aisle only to find out that the overhead compartments were full. So then we’d have to back up to find an available spot for our carry-ons. But there would be people behind us trying to get on. And then the flight attendants would be weaving in and out of this already cramped and crowded space. No one was really directing passenger flow to make things smoother.

And when we were finally seated, we realized how small the plane was. The seats were incredibly tight and cramped. It was game over if the passenger ahead decided they wanted to lean back. Which, of course, they did.

Also, there were no TVs on the flight. We were told to visit a link to access shows but it didn’t work. So unless you came prepared with downloaded shows/movies, you had nothing to watch.

The one upside was the chicken sandwich – that was pretty decent. Surprisingly, it was better than the food on Air Canada.

Flying with Air Canada

Coming home, I was luckily able to book with Air Canada. I don’t think flying economy is ever comfortable, but it was far better than Caribbean Airlines.

The check-in line took forever to get through. It’s probably why we took off 25 minutes late. But somehow, we landed in Canada right on time.

The onboarding process was pretty smooth. The staff were helpful and provided quick service.

And the seats weren’t as cramped. Although, I did pay a little extra to have a few more inches of leg room.

Flight schedule

Air Canada typically flies to and from Grenada every Thursday and Sunday.

The flights to Grenada are in the morning around 9:30 am. So you get there in the afternoon and still have the rest of the day to get things done.

And the flights back to Toronto are in evenings around 4-5pm. Which isn’t that great because it’s quite late by the time you get home. All you can do is go to bed so it’s almost like arriving the next morning.

But I’ll take it. Anything to get me back home (as long as it’s direct).

Pricing

The prices for Caribbean Airlines and Air Canada are very similar. A round trip in economy is typically CAD $1300-$1500. And that seems to be the standard price year-round. I’ve looked into booking my tickets for next year since I know when my terms are starting and ending. Even the flights for August 2023 are about CAD $1500.

Alternative flights

For cheaper flights, you can try booking with American Airlines and Jet Blue from Toronto. But these flights have 2-3 layovers and travel times that vary from 18-32 hours.

Another option is to take Jet Blue from Buffalo to New York, then from New York to Grenada. This is a good option if you have someone that can drive you to Buffalo.

Final thoughts

As long as Air Canada flights are available, I will never book Caribbean Airlines again. Fortunately, I only have to fly out 2 more times to Grenada for terms 3/4 and 5. And after that I’ll be in the US for rotations.

So those are some of the airlines that fly to Grenada and my experiences with each.

Do you have any interesting/crazy travel stories?
